A solution has been developed for dealing with the shortage of anesthesiologists to deliver a light anesthetic to patients. For the last five years, the University Medical Center (UMC) at Utrecht, together with the Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC) have been training anesthetic operating department assistants for the qualification for Sedation Practitioner. This has turned out to be a success: in Utrecht and Amsterdam alone, more than 6,000 patients have safely and comfortably been administered a light anesthetic for endoscopic treatment and other procedures in the last five years.
