Because of the donor shortage, one in 10 people in the Netherlands dies while on the waiting list for a donor liver. Consequently, there is a great need for alternative treatments for liver failure patients. Veterinarian Baukje Schotanus studied the use of liver stem cells for the development of new liver disease therapies in humans and animals. She discovered activation mechanisms to make stem cells grow faster. Schotanus has obtained her doctorate with cum laude qualification at Utrecht University on 8 November.
