Heart operations that require the use of cardiopulmonary bypass machines, such as heart bypass operations, often cause inflammation reactions in the body. Doctoral Candidate Suzanne Kats has concluded that the enzyme alkaline phosphatase is an effective antitoxin for these inflammations. She has studied a method for reducing these inflammation reactions and will defend her dissertation at Utrecht University on 25 November. Suzanne Kats is a cardiothoracic surgeon in Maastricht.
